Ayurveda and Diabetes

Ayurveda and Diabetes

Ayurveda is from an ancient Hindu word that means the science of life. It originated in India and continues to be used by millions of people worldwide. Ayurvedic medicine is based upon the theory of balance and wholeness of the universe and the body. The principles of Ayurveda state that a person comprises the body, mind, and spirit, with health being the holistic union of the three. Ayurveda focuses on healthy living with therapeutic measures that relate to physical, mental, social, and spiritual harmony.

It is always said and proved that in a way the Ayurvedic remedies for diabetes mellitus are the oldest among all the obtainable treatments. The approach of Ayurveda towards diabetes mellitus is that, diabetes mellitus is a disease caused due to doshas. The doshas are the three errors that govern the human body. These are the vata dosha, pitta dosha and kapha dosha. These three errors must be present in a proper balance within the body in order to keep the body in the normal state of its execution. If even one of the doshas is vitiated, then it can lead to diseases, and diabetes mellitus is one of them.

Ayurveda includes diabetes mellitus in the prameha category. Pramehas are a list of urinary disorders, especially characterized by profuse urination with several abnormal qualities. There are twenty kinds of pramehas in Ayurveda.

According to the doshic causes, these pramehas are classified as follows:-

  • Vataja pramehas.
  • Pittaja pramehas.
  • Kaphaja pramehas.

Out of these, diabetes mellitus is termed as madhumeha. It is one of the four vataja pramehas. Most of the other treatment methods for diabetes mellitus regard it as a largely dietary disease. But Ayurveda here differs widely in its outlook. Ayurveda does not regard diabetes mellitus as a disease that can be treated by mere medicine or by a dietary regimen. The Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes mellitus is based on an entire change in the lifestyle of the person. Along with medication and diet, the patient is also advised to lead a healthy lifestyle and live an active life. Even mental aspects of the disease are stressed. Most vataja disorders originate in the brain, and since madhumeha is classified as vataja, it is highly important to keep the brain in its right manner of functioning.

Another basic difference is in the treatment of the complications that diabetes mellitus causes. Diabetes mellitus can cause several complications in the long run such as kidney failure, paralysis and gangrene. Each of these can be fatal conditions individually. Conventional medical science tries to reduce the blood sugar level, but does not put more weight on the treatment of the complications. However, in Ayurveda, madhumeha is a broad concept which does not include just the hyperglycaemia; it also takes into account all the possible complications. The body is taken as a whole and the treatment is done accordingly.

Ayurveda is very closely knit with yoga for the treatment and control of diabetes mellitus. For example, the paschimottasana is highly recommended for patients of madhumeha. In this manner, Ayurveda is not restricted in its treatment of diabetes, but takes a much broader perspective.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Diabetes

In Ayurveda, people, their health, and the universe are all linked. It is believed that health problems result when these relationships are out of equilibrium. In Ayurvedic medicine, herbs, metals, massage, and other products and techniques are used with the intent of cleansing the body and restoring balance. This is believed to help treat illness and promote wellness. Ayurvedic practitioners expect patients to be active participants in their treatment, because many Ayurvedic treatments require changes in diet, lifestyle, and habits.

It is well predictable that important aspects of diabetes management are nutrition, exercise, and emotional harmony. Ayurvedic treatments are centred on the improvement in these three areas of health and well-being. Ayurvedic practitioners will ask a patient question to determine his or her primary dosha, or the type of natural forces at work in the body, and the balance of doshas. The practitioner will ask about diet, behaviour, lifestyle practices, and the most recent illness and symptoms. Bodily description such as teeth, skin, eyes, and weight will be observed. An Ayurvedic practitioner will create an individualized plan to bring harmony and balance to each patient doshas. This leads to the control of the diabetes and the prevention of long-term complications.

Additionally, Ayurvedic practitioners use herbal preparations, Yoga, and breathing exercises to help diabetics.
