Chitrak (Chitraka) - Medicinal Properties, Indications & Uses


In this fast paced world every third person is suffering from Indigestion (when the food remain undigested or is not digested properly), which is the root cause for all the ailments to take place. Indigestion or Upset Stomach or also called as Dyspepsia is a condition which describes abdominal discomfort. It is not a disease but a group of symptoms that includes lack of appetite, nausea, constipation, abdominal gas, heart burn and belching etc. For sudden relief people are using antacids and so many allopathic medicines which is not a permanent care and have more chances for reoccurring of same symptoms again and again.

But if we talk about Ayurveda, Science of life - This undigested food is termed as AMA (Endotoxins) that is formed when AGNI that is the digestive enzymes are not stimulated properly. This undigested food leads to many major autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and nephrotic syndrome etc.

It is a plant that grows all over the year; up to the height of 3 to 6 feet.

  • Leaves: Its leaves are dark green in color, ovate in shape, are about 2 to3 inches in length and are 1 to 1.5 inches wide.
  • Flowers: Flowers are white in color with five petals.
  • Root: Its root is light brown in color from outside and is white from inside.

Physical Properties

  • Ras (Taste): Katu (Bitter)
  • Guna (Properties): Laghu (Light), Tikshan (Piercing)
  • Viraya (Action): Ushna (Hot potency)
  • Vipaka (Post digestive effect): Katu (Undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion)
  • Dosha: It pacifies Kapha and Vata dosha.

The Chemical Constituents Chitraka Contains are as follows:

  1. Plumbagin
  2. 3 - Chloroplumbagin
  3. Plumbagic Acid
  4. Isozeylinone
  5. Glucose
  6. Fructose
  7. Aspartic Acid
  8. Hydroxyproline

Indications and Uses

The main indication of Chitraka is in indigestion, as it strengthens the digestion by its DIPAN and PACHAN karma (it works on the stimulation of the digestive enzymes).
