Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease where there is high levels of blood sugar in the body. Here body is not able to make proper use of insulin due to the hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Absence of insulin which is produced by the pancreas organ or less production leads to this condition. It may be type 1 or type 2. Where there is no synthesis of insulin is type 1 and less insulin production by body is termed as type 2.

This is known as Madhumeha according to Ayurveda. Madhu means honey and Meha means urine. Madhumeha is best correlated with Vataja meha where Vata is involved in its Prakupit awastha with Kapha. Vata is one among three doshas or energies of body which indicates deterioration of body organs/dhatus that's why diabetes affects number of body organs and comes with lot of complications in body. One more causative factor is accumulation of some specific toxins (Ama) which gets settle down in pancreas and hinder its normal functions.

Ayurveda says that Madhumeha is a Maha roga that when goes out of control may lead to many complications like neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy and myopathy.

If we talk about Madhumeha management as per Ayurveda, we say that person needs to change his or her diet and life style pattern along with some natural supplements. Dietary and lifestyle changes with herbs helps to rejuvenate the body cells and allow them to perform their functions properly.

Ayurveda defines healthy person as the individual with balanced rate of Agni (metabolism), Doshas (bio-energies), Dhatus (body muscles and tissues), and Malas (unwanted wastes). The healthy individual is self-established with his senses, soul and mind fully in sync with each other and maintaining a total harmony with internal peace.
